Before you start reading this, do one thing: unclench your jaw.

Around 8 to 10% of the UK’s population suffers from bruxism, the medical term for teeth grinding or clenching.

As such, thousands of us are dealing with a whole host of symptoms: from dental problems and headaches, to pain in the face, neck or shoulders, and TMJ disorders (also known as TMDs).

But now, salvation has come from an unlikely source: Kylie Jenner.

When she’s not running a business empire, raising her two kids, or attending award nights with Timothée Chalamet, the billionaire is doing ‘facial exercises’ in the mirror.

In a TikTok video that’s been liked over 2.7 million times, the 28-year-old can be seen practicing the ‘WOW’ face yoga position — saying the word ‘wow’ very slowly, opening your mouth as widely as possible.

While this particular movement is said to make cheekbones look like they could cut glass, some experts claim it could also be an easy and efficient way to ease chronic jaw pain — including TMDs.

Shilen Patel, one of just five people in the UK who exclusively specialises TMDs, tells Metro that the WOW pose might just be an ‘effective’ method for people suffering with this condition.

What are TMDs?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your jawbone to your skull, facilitating movements such as chewing and speaking.

There’s one TMJ on each side of the jaw and disorders centralised in this spot are incredibly common, affecting millions of young people across the globe.

TMD affects the movement of the jaw, meaning that people with this problem can experience serious pain, restricted movement, and sometimes popping or clicking sounds.

While there’s no one reason someone develops a TMD, common causes include muscle problems prompted by regularly chewing gum or biting nails, joint problems such as osteoarthritis, stress, and other factors such as excessive jaw clenching.

In fact, recognised by academics as a ‘significant and largely unrecognised health burden’, it’s been estimated that nearly a third of the global population (29.5%) suffers from TMDs.

In serious cases, surgery is sometimes necessary. But there’s also evidence to suggest that simple facial yoga movements can alleviate this acheing.

How can the ‘WOW method’ help with jaw pain?

Shilen has worked with clients from all over the world who are experiencing TMJ and facial pain — providing treatments such as TMJ replacements, to Botox injections and referrals for stress, anxiety and depression related services.

Shilen is well-versed in how best to approach treatment of TMDs, and according to him, the WOW position is an effective approach.

He tells Metro: ‘The movement stretches the muscles, lengthens them and therefore reduces tension and tightness like yoga’.

However, he warns that people should be careful how often they’re doing this routine.

One of the most common elements of face yoga is the idea of repeating exercises 20 times. But Shilen emphasises that this is not a good idea.

‘Twenty times a day is excessive and would likely cause the TMJ disc to anteriorly displace,’ the expert shares. Essentially, you could actually cause a TMD by going overboard.

He continues: ‘Many of my patients present [with TMDs] after prolonged mouth opening, such as after a prolonged appointment with their dentist.’

So, how many times should we be saying ‘wow’?

‘I would suggest it twice a day,’ says Shilen.

An even more effective solution to TMD? Botox.

Shilen explains that Botox injections can have a ‘long term impact’ after just three sessions.

    'An emerging go-to solution'

Nurse prescriber and aesthetic trainer, Natalja Andrejeva, says that Botox is an ’emerging go-to solution’ for teeth-grinding and jaw clenching.

‘Over the past few years, I’ve seen a noticeable rise in clients seeking relief from bruxism using Botox, especially post-pandemic,’ she tells Metro.

‘Botox is injected into the masseter muscles to relax them. This reduces the intensity of clenching and grinding without affecting your ability to chew or speak.’

The result? ‘Less jaw tension, fewer headaches, and better sleep and quality of life. You’ll also get a slightly slimmer jawline,’ adds Natalja, founder of Face Code Aesthetic, where she offers the treatment, starting at £290.

‘Typically, treatment would be required every three to six months, depending on muscle strength and individual response.

‘But over time, some clients find they can space out treatments more as the habit and symptoms lessen.’
